The Age of Aquarius

When the Moon is in the Seventh House, and Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace shall guide the planets, and love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius ..

When the zodiac was first put into place during the Babylonian times they were actually named after constellations in the sky.  As we know the sun travels around the Earth once a year making its way through each zodiac. The astrological year begins on the vernal equinox marking the time when the sun crosses the celestial equator; the line that divides the heaven into a northern half and a southern half. The celestial equator is on the same line as the Earth's equator, except it is projected into the heavens. There are two equinoxes during the year, vernal and autumnal.

When astrology first came about the vernal equinox signaled the sun entering the sign of Aries but also the constellation of Aries making the two identical. It was discovered over years that the Earth shifts its position as it spins on its axis through the solar system, often called the Earth's "wobble," changing the placement of the celestial equator. Therefore, over time the vernal equinox will eventually take place in an entirely different constellation.

Does this mean our Sun signs aren't really what they are?  Is there really a 13th astrological sign?

This is where astrology and astronomy have diverged.  When an astrologer talks about Aquarius they are referring to the eleventh astrological sign and its characteristics, symbols and associations.  When an astronomer talks about Aquarius they are referring to the constellation in the sky.  In astronomy the slow motion of the Earth's tilt is referred to as the precession of the equinoxes because during the span of many, many years the equinoxes slowly move through the constellation in an apparent backward order. Or referred to as retrograde.

At a rate of 1 degree every 7 1/2 years the equinoxes move through the zodiac. In the space of about 2,150 years, the equinoxes move through one sign of the zodiac which is referred to as an astrological Age or a Great Month.  It takes approximately 25,820 years for the equinoxes to move through the entire twelve signs of the zodiac.

Around the year A.D. 2000, the vernal equinox was entering the constellation of Aquarius. Hence, "This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius."

The start of the Aquarian age is somewhat contentious.  Because the constellations are not uniform in size some astrologers believe the corresponding Ages should vary in time.  Some believe that the new Age already started, as far back as the 18th or 19th century.  There are supporters for the new Age all the way up to the 27th century.

Some astrologers believe Ages affect mankind while some believe they are symbolic to the rise and fall of civilization and cultural tendencies.  Aquarius traditionally rules electricity, computers, flight, democracy, freedom, humanitarianism, idealists, modernization, astrology, nervous disorders, rebels and rebellion and other keywords such as, nonconformity, philanthropy, veracity, perseverance and irresolution.  The many appearances of these developments over the last few centuries is an indication to some astrologers when the Age of Aquarius began.

Regardless of the controversy there is on the arrival of the new Age, The Dawning, we can all agree that Aquarius is the sign of the future, the visionary and the seeker of knowledge.

We have hope.
